Kaspar Hamacher is a Belgian designer who uses wooden logs to create unique stools. The method used to get the desired result is rather unusual. The stools are created by setting a log on fire. The burnt away sections shape the log until it finally starts to look like a stool. The bark is also stripped from the log and the result is a clean and artistic form. The project is called Ausgebrannt which means “burnt out” in German.
We’ve gotten so used to the classical sofa and armchair designs that it seems odd now to look at one that lacks something like the armrests for example. But such designs exist and they can actually be pretty comfortable and quite eye-catching. An armless loveseat or sofa can be a cool focal point for a modern living room or an interesting accent piece for a bedroom. We found some intriguing examples that we’d like to share with you.
Sideboards usually have short legs and in some cases they even go all the way down to the floor. Also, the traditional kind sometimes featured a hutch at the top which was used for the display of China and other things. Modern sideboards such as this one from Fiona McDonald have little in common with the original designs. Nevertheless, they keep alive the spirit and charm of this furniture piece. The term sideboard is the most widely used one from the ones previously mentioned.
